What is e-Bug?

e-Bug is a European wide, antibiotic and hygiene teaching resource for junior and senior school children.

It is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of antibiotics and the importance of prudent use of antibiotics.  The programme demonstrates how inappropriate use of antibiotics can adversely affect an individual's good bugs and cause resistance in the community. It demonstrates the importance of hand and respiratory hygiene in minimising the spread of infections in the community, including teaching how to wash hands most effectively. On the e-Bug website you can play games and learn all about micro organisms, hygiene and antibiotic use.

Resources are being distributed to teachers across the UK and other European countries, by both the Health Protection Agency and the Department of Health to improve student's knowledge of public health and to foster an interest in science.

e-Bug is a European Commission funded exciting new initiative to create a curriculum supplement series (Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3) that complies with the Department of Education and QCA educational standards for Junior and Senior schools. Its main aim is to teach young people about microbes, appropriate use of antibiotics, how microbial infections are spread and can be prevented through improved hygiene and vaccine use.

e-Bug and Swine Flu
e-Bug has a series of educational materials and games on topics associated with microbes and the spread, treatment and prevention of infection. Many of these activities can be used to educate children about swine flu, particularly the respiratory and hand hygiene sections.

The spread of swine flu can be limited through basic respiratory hygiene including covering the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing and disposing dirty tissues promptly and carefully.
