MRSA Action UK Annual General Meeting 13th March 2010

MRSA Action UK Patron Edwina Currie gave a speech congratulating the Charity, and echoing our President Professor Hugh Pennington's message of congratulations for an excellent year.

Edwina was inspiring and took the opportunity to meet with members and friends who had attended the AGM.  Edwina, pictured below with Treasurer Mavis Law, asked that we all do just one thing, there would be lots of opportunity to meet up with prospective candidates in the forthcoming elections, radio broadcasts with phone-ins, doorstep opportunities, surgeries, TV opportunities and chances for a platform to have our say.  Don't be one of the shy ones who sits at the back and says nothing, this is democracy and it's our chance to have our say.  Nobody enters hospital expecting to get sicker, yet 9,000 people a year die as a result of MRSA and other healthcare infections.  This is a national disgrace.

As well as being a former Health Minister and Broadcaster, Edwina was a radio presenter and reminded everyone of Jennifer's Ear when Labour ran a Party Election Broadcast about a five year old girl with glue ear who waited a year for the simple operation to insert vents.  It was high profile on the front pages and on the 10 o'clock news so stayed in the minds of those who could bring about change.

Edwina said we had achieved an amazing amount with an annual turnover of 20,000 pounds and that the NHS could learn from us.

Derek Butler presented the Annual Report to members and guests at the event and was delighted to be re-elected to continue as Chair of MRSA Action UK, and pleased to welcome the new Board of Trustees with 5 new appointments.

Weaver Vale Housing Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council attended to show their support and outlined some of the work they are doing in infection prevention and control and raising awareness during conversations with members.

Executive positions for the Board of Trustees for the next year are:

Chair - Derek Butler

Vice Chair - Dale Law

Treasurer - Mavis Law

Secretary - Maria Cann

Membership Secretary - Coleen Martin
