MRSA Action UK was founded by a group of people who all had life changing experiences or lost a loved one through contracting MRSA. We came together through our involvement in supporting each other and have broadened our membership by supporting others through our work with healthcare providers and the agencies that support the health economy. We have formed alliances with other organisations from around the UK to join in our campaign for safer standards in our hospitals and healthcare settings.
We are all volunteers and share a common purpose - to relieve the distress and suffering experienced by patients who contract healthcare associated infections. We aim to raise the awareness of the general public in all areas relating to healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.
MRSA Action UK work alongside other patient groups and charities, regulators and government agencies to help bring improvements and safe standards to the healthcare system.
MRSA Action UK is a registered charity with a constitution and the Board of Trustees are elected by the membership annually.
Our Mission Statement
The mission of MRSA Action UK is to raise public awareness and to influence Government and healthcare providers in the fight to prevent MRSA and other healthcare associated infections.
We do this by sharing knowledge and best practice and by providing an advocacy and support service for victims who have been affected by healthcare associated infections. We assist the bereaved and their dependants, and give feedback to Government agencies, healthcare providers and partner organisations through our shared learning and experience. We are guided by the principle that the care and safety of patients should never be compromised.
The Board of Trustees
Derek Butler is the elected Chair of the MRSA Action UK Board. The Board of Trustees are all volunteers who have been affected by healthcare associated infections like MRSA. Derek has shared his personal experience and given case studies in presentations at many Infection Prevention training events and has taken part in TV and radio interviews about MRSA and antimicrobial resistance. Derek has been the Chair of MRSA Action UK since 2007.
Professor Hugh Pennington is Emeritus Professor of Microbiology at Aberdeen University, and is proud to be our president. Hugh is the patients' champion, speaking on the techniques that all healthcare providers should aspire to in the quest to make avoidable infections a never event, and has been our president since 2007.
Edwina Currie is involved in a number of non-partisan patient organisations and became our patron in 2007. Edwina has campaigned on cleaner hospitals with the Patients Association and has represented our charity at many high profile conferences, events and training days.
